As it turns out, it looks like Toyota is still the numero-uno when it comes to car sales. We had reported that VW sold 4.4m units compared to Toyota’s 4.2m for the same period but it seems there is something more to be discovered in those figures. You see, VW’s sales take into account the units sold by VW, its subsidiaries, JV’s and even the ones where it DOES NOT have a majority stake.
If we leave that out of the equation, then VW has not provided its proper sales figures yet, but we do have Toyota’s sales if you consider these things and that stands at a record 4.9m units. So, Toyota has hit back with these sales figures to claim the number one spot given to VW by the media, especially the German media that crowned VW No.1.
What will aid Toyota’s No1 post though is that VW’s sales boost is due to the scrappage scheme where the German manufacturer has extracted maximum benefit while Toyota’s sales have always remained stable. So, going by this, VW’s No1 spot is still sometime coming, but for now we know that its not very far ahead and very much achieveable now that VW is opening up into markets like India where it could get some serious car sales .
