Toyota launches BS-4 Innova; Upgrades Fortuner’s brakes

Toyota has upgraded its best seller Innova to Bharat Stage-4 norms that came into effect 21 days back. Toyota has upgraded the Innova’s 2.5L Common rail engine by adding an intercooler, making changes to the catalytic converter and fine tuning the ECU. The upgradations have resulted in a marginal increase in power. We tried searching Toyota’s website for the details but the details have not been updated yet.

So what identifies the BS4 Innova? Well you get an intercooler badge on the fender and a Bharat Stage-4 sticker on the tail gate. Prices have jumped up by Rs 27,000 over the BS3 variants. We are still unsure if the BS3 will continue to be sold in non-metros.

New upgraded brakes with larger and thicker discs

 Taking feedback from a number of customer complaints (and fearing another recall), Toyota has upgraded the brakes on its  Fortuner SUV. The Fortuner used a brake system similar to the one on the Innova and that was obviously inadequate to handle the extra mass and power. Our source, Autocar India had already indicated this in September 2009. Dealers now say that the Fortuners delivered after February sport improved brakes – larger diameter and thicker discs. However, brakes of existing customers’ vehicles will be changed only on a case-to-case basis which we feel is totally unacceptable. Brakes are the most important part in terms of safety and poor brakes must be changed at any cost. Toyota still dont seem to have changed after the massive recalls.
