Volkswagen retains 2010 Engine of the Year Award

Volkswagen have retained the Engine of the Year Award for second year in a row with the brilliant 1.4L TSi taking top honours this year. The TSi engine uses a Supercharger for low speed boost while a turbocharger takes over at higher engine speeds thereby eliminating any possibility of turbo lag. This engine produces a mindboggling 170bhp while still returning over 20km/l.The same engine also took top honours in the 1.0L – 1.4L category. The engine powers many VW models from the Golf to the Passat CC. The award was organised by Engine Technology International. The BMW group claimed four awards while Fiat’s latest multiair turbo was adjudged the best new engine.

Dr Rudiger Szengel, Head of Volkswagen Engine Development, accepted the award. He said: “The combination of compressor and turbocharging provides an excellent basis for combining driving pleasure and low fuel consumption.”

The Golf also won the World Car of the Year 2010.
