Volkswagen unveiled a revolutionary 1.2ltr TDI engine during ongoing Vienna Motor Symposium. This all new Turbocharged Three Cylinder Diesel engine will find it’s place in many upcoming small cars from VW stable. The first VW car which will be powered by this engine could be VW Polo Blue Motion, scheduled for 2010 second half launch. Though the engine is small interms of the capacity, it will answer your needs interms of power and torque.
The maximum torque of this tiny three port engine is 180Nm @ 2000 rpm. VW is claiming maximum power out put of 74hp for this new engine. The features list of this new engine does not end there. The emission level and fuel efficiency figures are exceptional, the fuel efficiency figure is truly unbelievable, which reaches 30.3km/ltr (read it once again) with very low emission figure ( 87g/Km). For a small engine with like this especially with a three cylinder configuration the driver may have to compromise on noise and dynamic balance aspects.
“Attitudes towards mobility are changing, not only for all purposes of the economic crisis and climate change are moving towards a sustainable perspective. The political entities around the world have reacted very differently to these issues, but always focused on the promotion of electric mobility ” said Wolfgang Steiger / Director of Future Technologies in VW AG.
Now in Indian perspective, will this 1.2ltr TDI engine find a place in Volkswagen India’s offering list? We believe there are bright chances, it may take some time though. Currently fierce battle is going on Indian hatchback segment, and no one can be idle. Already Ford Figo and Chevrolet Beat has tasted the success in India. Even VW Polo hatch got some quick numbers immediately after it’s Indian launch. So will VW Polo can sustain the figures in long term? Will Volkswagen bring this ace to India to fetch more numbers? If VW India bring this fuel efficient engine to fuel efficiency conscious market like ours, many automakers have to run for their money.
